Raleigh / August 2024 in Wilmington
Raleigh to Wilmington, NC | North Carolina State Capitol Building | A Week in Wilmington | August 2024
After an uncomfortably hot and humid night camping North of Raleigh, we had no problem getting up early and getting back on the road. Since we were less than a half hour from downtown, we saw this as our opportunity to visit the North Carolina state capitol building for the first time. On our way to the city center, we stopped to grab donuts (something I had suggested the night before to improve morale when I realized how uncomfortable the night would be). We then drove to the capitol and had no issues finding a free parking spot across from the building — which is exactly why Sunday mornings are our favorite time to see capitol buildings!
Overall, we weren’t that impressed with the building — it was kind of boring, like the only way I can describe it is we circled around the whole thing looking for the “front”, but none of the sides of the building looked any different from the others. But none of them were especially appealing either. Oh well, we still had a nice walk and enjoyed eating our donuts on a bench.
Finally, it was time to finish our drive to Wilmington — after 2 months away, we were already back…probably for the last time this year together. The 3 hour drive went by smoothly, and soon enough we arrived and picked up our rental car. At this point it was just before noon and scorching hot, and we weren’t sure how to pass the time, but our hotel was so accommodating and let us check in super early!
Thankfully after our first day here, the temperatures dropped and it was actually tolerable outside for the rest of the week! Curtis participated in a week of training and Charlotte and I enjoyed going between the hotel room and sunbathing outside. I gave the van a good deep clean and we got our cracked windshield replaced. We stayed in the Landfall neighborhood again at the Residence Inn, and our favorite restaurant of the week was Nicki’s Sushi.
The week went by quickly, and soon it was time to move on again — but this time, we only had to travel an hour South, where Curtis would have the opportunity to work on a new-to-him plant!
