Spending 2 Weeks in Oswego, NY | Oswego Riverfront Walk | Fort Ontario State Historic Site | September 2024

We spent the first two weeks of September in Oswego, NY, and I think out of all the times we’ve stayed here, these weeks are probably my favorite. Camping in the Finger Lakes was definitely colder than we’ve been used to this year and that solidified in my mind that I wasn’t ready for the true cold of winter and that we have to find a way to go Southwest again this winter! But once in Oswego, the weather was quite pleasant and though Curtis had to work 12 hours every day on the day shift, we still found time to go out for evening walks every night and developed a routine here.

We stayed at the Home2 Inn & Suites again. When we returned, we found that Charlotte was still the ‘pet of the week’ from our stay almost a month ago…and she remained pet of the week until we left. And no, it’s not because there weren’t other dogs there…there were. She’s just that special. 😉

Last time we were here, we ate out with Curtis’ colleagues almost every night, but since he was working longer hours this time we were a bit more selfish with our limited time together. While the more fine dining restaurants we enjoyed with them were nice, this time we were happy to have a little rotation of places that are more us. This included calzones from Riverwalk Pizza, sushi and poke bowls from Fuse, and Mexican from Azteca Mexican Grill. We tried a few other places, but these 3 were always consistently good and just what we wanted – especially Fuse where we got on a first name basis with the owner.

Every night, Curtis would get back to the hotel around 6:30, and Charlotte and I would be waiting for him outside. We’d hop in the car and drive downtown, usually to the riverwalk, go for a long walk as the sun set, then pick up food and head back to the hotel to eat and hang out. On Thursdays, they would close down a street for the farmer’s market, and we enjoyed supporting some of the local vendors there.

On our last weekend in town, Curtis’ brother and sister came up from Massachusetts to hang out with us. They arrived on a Friday night, and we treated them to calzones and ice cream, went for a walk around town, followed by an evening of lively conversation. The next day, Curtis of course had to work, but the three of us went out again and explored a couple places that I hadn’t been: we walked to the Maritime park on the harbor, complete with great views of the lighthouse and power plant, and took a tour of Fort Ontario. It was only $4/person to go on a self-guided tour through the buildings and all around the inside. Curtis and I hadn’t done this yet because it’s closed in the winter and some weekdays (basically anytime he could go!) but maybe someday we’ll make a better effort to — especially since dogs are also allowed!

They headed back to Massachusetts that afternoon, and then Curtis and I had two more days before our time here was up. It was overall a great assignment, and I think it’s cool that we’ve basically seen this town in all four seasons now! But when the time came to leave, we were definitely ready to go because this meant it was finally time to make our long anticipated drive West!
