Brunswick Park / Wilmington Week 2

Kayaking & Hiking in Brunswick Park | Second Week in Wilmington | November 2022

On the last day of our 3 day weekend in Wilmington, the tropical storm and all the rain it brought had finally passed, leaving us with a perfect sunny and not too hot day to spend outside. Curtis had pointed out a park the day before where he knew some letterboxes might be hidden, and when we saw that we could both hike and kayak there, we decided it was the perfect place to spend the day. We crossed the river and drove down to Brunswick Nature Park.

We began our adventure on the water. Town Creek, a tributary to the Cape Fear River, runs through the area and made for a perfect lazy Sunday paddle. We put in and began heading West, following the long twists and turns of the creek. There was tall grass and tall, bare cypress trees on either side, and clear skies above. We agreed that this was exactly what we were missing out on when we lived in Charleston — The best way to enjoy the beauty of the lowcountry is often not by foot, but by boat. The views from our paddle were certainly better than those on the hike we took after, but we still enjoyed our walk in the woods, admiring the trees and greenery…though the possibility of alligators kept us alert.

At first when planning for this weekend, we had been disappointed that we only really had this 3 day weekend to explore, but after today we realized this was honestly good enough. Between this weekend and our weekend trip back in 2016, we had now covered most of the historical sites and attractions in the area that interested us. We’ll also be back in the future, so there will always be more time for more exploring, either locally or should we choose to drive further for day trips!

We ended the day with seafood from the Reel Cafe. The rest of the week went similarly to the first week, with Curtis training throughout the day and myself working on this site. While Curtis’ first week was mostly HR administrative stuff, the second week got more technical and thankfully so far he’s enjoyed everything he’s learning and will be doing!

We also enjoyed all the restaurants we tried, so since we’re now “foodies” we’ll share our favorites: Copper Penny for Philly style sandwiches, Fun Bowl for poke or ramen bowls, Fat Tony’s Pub for Italian, and the Marina Grill for seafood. We ate at the Marina Grill on our last night with Curtis’ new colleagues and enjoyed getting to know them and hearing more about life with this job.

Before we knew it, it was time to pack up and head back to see family for Thanksgiving. While there are still some unknowns and ways we will have to adjust to this new lifestyle, we enjoyed this first trip so much and now have some great memories to look back on our first month with the new company. Here’s to many more!
