Pony Creek / 9th Anniversary

Pony Creek Conservation Area | Glenwood, IA | 9 Year Wedding Anniversary | July 2022

At the end of July, we celebrated our 9th wedding anniversary. I’m not sure where all those years went, or how we’re even old enough to have been married for that long, and I can’t believe we’re now into our 10th year of marriage! That also means almost 9 years of writing about our adventures together. I remember way back when we were dating long-distance, and all we wanted was to have time together, make memories, and share new experiences. Now here we are, a decade later, having made the most of all the time we’ve had together and everywhere we’ve lived throughout our marriage, and still making experiencing new things together a priority in our life. Here’s to many more decades of adventure!

This year, we didn’t have any trips planned for our anniversary because Curtis was in the final weeks of his master’s program and in the thick of his job search. To celebrate our anniversary, we planned an afternoon that sounded the most fun and relaxing to us. We picked up sushi and a cute mini cake from a grocery store, then drove over to Pony Creek Conservation Area near Glenwood, Iowa. We had a picnic, went for a short walk, then took our kayak out for a paddle around Pony Creek.

The last time we visited Pony Creek was in November of 2020, back when this area was new to us. Back then we took a walk on the hiking trails with Charlotte, enjoyed views of the fall colors and the creek, and said that “someday we should come back with a kayak.”

It turned out to definitely be worth returning to — It didn’t look like much from what we could see along the South bank, but we were able to kayak almost 2.5 miles round trip. Best of all, we saw at least a dozen blue herons along the way! We kayaked in the shade along the West bank which was covered with greenery, and were spotting the herons so often.

It was a lovely evening, and we were thankful to be able to celebrate the day together, and to try to imagine what our life might look like on our next anniversary.
